The Rolex Submariner Vs the Rolex Sea-Dweller

Meant for the divers, these two versions have taken the new ‘Rolex’ to new heights, should we say, depths. These two models are popular all around the world because of their ability to perform accurately even deep under water.

How is the Sea-Dweller Different in the Submariner?

The simple difference between the two lies in their depth ratings. While the existing Submariner models have a maximum depth rating of 300 meters or 1000 feet, the current variations of Sea-Dweller can easily go submerged up to a depth of 4000 feet (all earlier models had a depth rating of 2000 ft). As a result, the Submariner is the option of amateur and recreational divers whereas professional sailors go to the Sea-Dweller.
Another major difference between the 2 versions is that the existence of a one way gas escape valve opposite the winding crown at the Sea-Dweller.

This special feature was added to it to protect the view from inner pressure, which builds-up if the divers go to the decompression chambers. Deep sea divers use a helium/oxygen mixture in their own air tanks, which can easily permeate the crystal of this watch. However, during decompression, helium particles are not able to come out of the opinion, thus, blowing the crystal out of the watch. The gas escape valve was the a solution to this issue, which has proved extremely powerful. The current Sea-Dweller models include a larger and improved gas escape valve.

You’ll also realize that the Sea-Dweller is larger than the Submariner. This primarily is due to the thicker sapphire crystal which produces the former around 4mm thicker than the latter. The thicker crystal also leads to another noteworthy difference between the two. Although the Sea-Dweller exhibits the date, it does not feature the Cyclops lens (magnifying lens). The thicker crystal does not allow for such a magnifying lens.

To What Extent that the Sea-Dweller is Similar to the Submariner?

There are certain features found in both these models. The significant similarity between the two is the ability to survive under water with no flaw in their functionality. In addition, there are lots of different facets where both are similar. For instance, you can find the following features in both versions

1.
2. Unidirectional bezel, capable of turning just counterclockwise preventing the unintentional movement of the bezel while stirring
3. New Triplock system currently comes with a triple gasket system which screws snugly on the situation tubing and against the Oyster case. This offers another layer of protection under water
4. Self-winding mechanism with a perpetual motor

5. Made of either strong block of 904L stainless steel (a stainless steel alloy That’s totally rust resistant) or stone

Go to your Submariner, if you’re into recreational snorkeling, however, for true commercial and professional divers, the Sea-Dweller ought to be the choice.
